Saint Lucia, located in the eastern Caribbean Sea, gained its independence from Great Britain on February 22nd, 1979. Prior to this, the island had been under the rule of both the French and English, with each nation fighting for control over the island for over 200 years. The Treaty of Paris in 1814 granted Saint Lucia to the British, and the island remained a British colony until its independence.
Saint Lucia was a highly sought-after island due to its strategic location in the Caribbean Sea. The French and English both recognized its value as a strategic military and trading post, and as a result, they fought a series of battles for control over the island. This ongoing conflict continued for over 200 years until the Treaty of Paris solidified British control over the island.
